Attacks in Odesa and Zaporizhzhia leave dead and cause significant damage
A Ukrainian attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, currently under Russian control, killed a worker, according to local authorities installed by Russia. The incident took place amid a continuing escalation of hostilities in the region.
Damage in Odesa
On the morning of April 27, 2026, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drones carried out new attacks on the port city of Odesa, injuring at least 11 people, including two children. The attack hit residential areas and key infrastructure, damaging buildings, vehicles and civilian facilities such as a hotel and warehouses.
Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper said the attack affected three districts, with windows blown out in many buildings and significant damage in the port area. “All specialized and municipal services are working to mitigate the consequences. Law enforcement agencies are documenting the latest war crimes committed by Russia against the peaceful population of the Odesa region,” Kiper said.
Consequences in Zaporizhzhia
In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, a Russian attack killed a 59-year-old man, according to Governor Ivan Fedorov. “A man died as a result of an enemy attack in the Zaporizhzhia region,” Fedorov wrote on his Telegram account. In a separate incident, a Ukrainian drone attack killed an employee of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under Russian control and shut down. “A driver was killed today when a drone of the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck the transportation department of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant,” said the plant’s managers, who were appointed by Russia.
Fedorov also reported that Russian forces carried out 629 attacks on 45 settlements in the region in a single day, with at least 50 reports of damage to homes and infrastructure.
Incidents in the Belgorod region
In addition, Russian authorities reported Ukrainian drone attacks in the border region of Belgorod, where at least one person was killed and four women were injured, with damage to buildings and vehicles.
Stalled diplomatic efforts
These attacks come at a time when diplomatic efforts to end the war remain stalled. Former president of the United States Donald Trump said last Sunday that he had “good conversations” with Presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “We are working on the Russia situation, on Russia and Ukraine, and I hope we can resolve it,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News.
He continued: “I have conversations with him [Putin] and also with President Zelenskyy, and those conversations have been good.” Trump expressed concern about the “hatred” between the two leaders, stressing that “it’s ridiculous” and that “hatred is a bad thing when you’re trying to solve something.”
Finally, Zelenskyy announced that he had signed security and energy cooperation agreements with Azerbaijan during a visit to Baku, adding that Kyiv had discussed the possibility of future negotiations with Russia.
