Step #7 in our guide to dating apps for a serious relationship gives the short version: public place, tell a friend, own transport. This is the full plan, including the part nobody explains, which is what to talk about once you are sitting across from each other.
The first date has one job. You are finding out whether the person from the chat is someone you want to see again. One hour is enough for that, and the plan below is built around it.
Before you go
- Pick the place yourself, or agree on it together. A café, a busy park, a food market. Somewhere with other people around and an easy exit.
- Daytime or early evening. Coffee at 11 a.m. is lower pressure than dinner at 8, and it has a natural end.
- Keep it short on purpose. Say in advance that you have about an hour. If it goes well you can extend it. If it does not, you already have your way out.
- Get there and back on your own. Drive, take transit or book your own ride. Do not accept a pickup from your home on a first meeting.
- Tell one friend. Send the person’s name, their profile, the place and the time, and agree to text when you are home.
- Do a quick check. A short video call beforehand, or a look at their verification badge, confirms the person matches the photos. It also takes the edge off the first five minutes.
Most of this is ordinary planning, and anyone worth a second date will understand it. Someone who argues with a public place or a short first meeting has told you something useful before you have even met.
While you are there
Keep your phone charged and your drink in sight. Go easy on alcohol, since you are trying to form an opinion and get home under your own power. If something feels off, you do not owe anyone a full evening. “I need to head out, thanks for meeting me” is a complete sentence. Bar and café staff are used to helping someone who wants to leave quietly, so ask them if you need to.
The values worth bringing up early
If you want a relationship, a few subjects decide whether one is possible. Finding a mismatch on the first or second date costs you an afternoon. Finding it in month eight costs a great deal more. These are the ones that matter most:
- What each of you is looking for. A relationship, something casual, or not sure yet.
- Kids. Wanting them, not wanting them, or already having them.
- Where you want to live. Staying in this city, moving back home, open to anywhere.
- How you spend your time. Work hours, weekends, how much time with family and friends.
- Deal-breakers you already know. For some people that is faith, for others smoking, drinking or pets.
You will not cover all five in an hour, and you should not try. One or two is plenty for a first date.
How to raise them without an interview
Asking “do you want children?” over the first coffee feels like a screening. The same subject can come up in ways that feel like ordinary conversation.
Offer yours first
Say your own answer and leave space. “I moved here for work, but I would like to end up closer to my family in a few years.” Most people respond with their own version, and nobody was questioned.
Ask about the present
“What does a good weekend look like for you?” tells you about pace, friends, family and priorities. So does “what is keeping you busy lately?”. How someone lives now is the best preview of how they would live with you.
Go through stories
“What was your family like growing up?” or “what made you choose this city?” lead naturally to what a person wants next. You learn the value and you hear a story in the same answer.
Say what you are looking for, lightly
“I am at the point where I would like to meet someone for real. No rush, but that is where I am.” It takes ten seconds, and the reaction tells you most of what you need.
If an answer does not match yours, notice it and keep the date pleasant. You do not need to settle anything at the table. You can decide later whether there is a second date.
Step back if you see these
🚩 Any request for money
Money, gift cards, crypto or an “investment tip”, before or after you meet. The FTC’s advice is blunt: never send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person.
🚩 Pressure to change the plan
Pushing for a private place, a pickup at your home or a different location at the last minute.
🚩 Repeated cancellations
Someone who cancels again and again, or always has a reason not to video call, may not be who the profile shows.
Afterwards
Text your friend that you are home. If you liked the person, say so the same day and suggest a second meeting. Being direct is far easier on both of you than making them guess. If you did not, a short kind message is better than silence: “It was good to meet you, but I did not feel a match. I wish you well.”
What to do next
One date tells you about one person. For the bigger picture, we looked at what the data says about who dating apps work for and what those people tend to do.
